Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty’s musical friendship began in the late 1970s. Nicks was a big fan of Petty’s work and wanted him to write a song for her first solo album.

At first, Petty was unsure about working with someone from a big rock band like Fleetwood Mac.

The two artists ended up collaborating on several songs. Petty wrote “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around” with Mike Campbell, which became a hit for Nicks.

This kicked off a long creative partnership between Nicks and Campbell that lasted for decades across many of her solo albums.

‘The Untamed Spirit’

Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty’s friendship blossomed after their hit duet. As Nicks worked on her second solo album, Petty gifted her another song he wrote called “I Will Run to You.” Though not a single, it still made waves on the charts.

Nicks was touched by Petty’s gesture. She said, “Tom wanted to write me something pretty, and he did.”

The recording process wasn’t easy though. They tried in New York and at Caribou Ranch, but couldn’t get the right vocal. They finally nailed it in L.A.

Heavenly Hints

“I Will Run to You” has some spiritual vibes. The lyrics talk about looking to a higher power or a close friend for help.

Here’s a taste of the words:

Your eye is on the sparrow And Your hand, it comforts me From the ends of the earth to the depth of my heart Let Your mercy and strength be seen

Nicks loved working with Petty. She said, “Tom and I love to sing together. We sing well. We have a great time. We complement each other.”

“Tough Love”

Years later, Nicks wrote a song about Petty called “Hard Advice.”

It came from a heart-to-heart they had after she left rehab.

Petty told her, “You don’t need help to write a song. You just need to get over this experience that bummed you out so bad.”

His words hit home. Nicks went and wrote the song, turning their talk into music.
