The goal of this paper is to analyse and compare the goals, scopes and methods used in environmental analysis (LCA) studies on frames, glazing and windows. First, the definition of a functional unit for LCA is discussed (3.1). This is followed by an overview of the different approaches to analysing the production and use phases of the life cycle of windows, and the methodological challenges that arise in analysing the end-of-life phase. The final section highlights the main results indicated in the reviewed publications regarding the global life cycle of windows, frames and glazing. This is done by presenting an average of the key results per phase of the life cycle (production (4.1), use (4.2) and end-of-life 4.3). The result is a more comprehensive view of the ecological impact of windows than has been previously published.
